Indian-American artist, known for Minimalist works
Zarina, whose abstract works drew on experiences of migration, has died.
Born Zarina Hashmi, the Indian-born artist who preferred to be known by her first name only, studied mathematics at university, which strongly influenced her work, before taking up various printmaking techniques during her travels in Bangkok and Paris. The themes of home, exile, identity and history were the focus of many of her works, reflecting a life of itinerancy.
As an educator, Zarina taught printmaking at Bennington College, Cornell University, and at the University of California. Over a craeer that spanned five decades,she was exhibited widely, showing at Bronx Museum of the Arts, Hammer Museum, Galerie Jaeger Bucher and Lakeeren–The Contemporary Art Gallery. In 2011, Zarina was one of the first artists to represent India at the Venice Biennale. Her work is in the collections of institutions such as Tate Modern, the Metropolitan Museum, MoMA and Whitney Museum.
