Former Guggenheim curator, X Zhu-Nowell will be the new artistic director of Shanghai’s Rockbund Art Museum, following the departure of Larys Frogier.
Since 2014, Zhu-Nowell has served as a curator at New York’s Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, where they co-founded the Asian Art Circle – an acquisition group focusing on artists from Asia and Asian diasporas – and curated the rotunda exhibition Wu Tsang: Anthem.
Zhu-Nowell has previously collaborated with RAM as a consulting curator and directed the fifth edition of the annual RAM Highlights in 2022, titled The Good Life. Zhu-Nowell’s exhibition programme for 2023 will focus on women artists from the Asian diaspora, including WangShui, Evelyn Taocheng Wang, Tosh Basco, Diane Severin Nguyen, Tan Jing and Shubigi Rao, according to Ocula.
‘Through these projects, I hope to spark new understandings of terms commonly thrown around in art contexts, such as place, personhood, geography, nationality, and identity,’ Zhu-Nowell said in a statement.
