The nonprofit grantmaker Artadia Awards has announced the winners of Chicago Artadia Awards 2023, open to artists who have lived and worked in Chicago’s Cook County for at least two years. Artists SaraNoa Mark, Nyeema Morgan and Julia Phillips have been selected from a shortlist of six artists and will each receive an unrestricted fund of $15,000.
Working with permanent materials such as carved stone tablets and wall graffiti, SaraNoa Mark (b.1991, New York) examines traces of time in physical surroundings and collective memories. Interdisciplinary artist Nyeema Morgan (b.1977, Philadelphia) merges textual and visual sources in her works to question the construction of knowledge in popular culture. Having held her solo show in New York’s MoMA PS1 in 2018, Julia Phillips (b.1985, Hamburg) focuses on functional objects as metaphors for social and psychological experiences. Other finalists included Bobbi Meier, Jacqueline Surdell and Orkideh Torabi.
Founded in 1999, the Artadia Award encompasses seven United States cities including Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco. The organisation has awarded over $6 million to over 380 artists.
