UCCA Center for Contemporary Art has launched its fourth space UCCA Clay in Yixing, Jiangsu Province – a city two hours west of Shanghai and known for its legacy in ceramics production. Joining UCCA’s three other spaces – its flagship space in Beijing, UCCA Dune in Beidaihe and UCCA Edge in Shanghai – the museum will open to the public in October.
Located in Yixing’s Creative & Cultural Ceramic Avenue, UCCA Clay is designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma known for his ‘architecture for the five senses’. The 2,400-square metre, two-story structure uses ceramic panels as its exterior and represents the first of Kuma’s projects to use clay as a primary material.
UCCA Clay will present three exhibitions each year, curated by the UCCA team and focused on Chinese and international artists working with the ceramic medium.
