Salzburger Kunstverein names new director

Mirela Baciak has been appointed director of Salzburger Kunstverein. She will take up the position at the Austrian institution in July with a five-year term and possible extension. Baciak has been curator for visual art and performance at the steirischer herbst festival since 2019.

For the Graz festival, she recently curated (alongside David Riff ) the special exhibition A War in the Distance. Prologue. Embattled Ukraine in Video Art and Film at Neue Galerie. The Warsaw-born curator also worked at Public Art Munich 2018, and organised or co-organised shows including Suspension of Disbelief (2023) at TANK Shanghai, Something Soft, Something Strange, Something Scary (2023) at PGS Sopot, the screening programme Surface Tension (2022) at Blickle Kino, Belvedere21, and Nature \ nature (2019) at Kunstraum Niederösterreich.

Baciak takes over from Séamus Kealy, who returned to Canada to take the lead of Oakville Galleries, after nine years in Salzburg.
