New York-based artist, writer and educator Sable Elyse Smith has won the biannual Suzanne Deal Booth/FLAG Art Foundation Prize. Smith will receive $200,000 and a traveling solo exhibition at the Contemporary Austin (who administers the prize) and New York’s Flag Art Foundation.
The multimedia artist Smith – who works across video, sculpture, photography and painting – tends to address the US incarceration system and those affected by it. Suzanne Deal Booth said in a statement, ‘Sable is a prescient voice among her generation with a dynamic artistic background, and does not shy away from asking challenging questions. I’m eager to see how she will continue expanding the impact and possibilities of an artistic practice.’
