Plus: Sara Cwynar and Laurie Kang among inaugural artists-in-residence at new LA-based Horizon Art Foundation
Saint Heron, Solange’s multidisciplinary platform, has announced the inaugural residents of its new ceramic residency; they are Armina Howada Mussa, Lalese Stamps, Dina Nur Satti, and Kenya Cree. Backed by Kering’s Women In Motion initiative, the programme supports women of colour working with ceramics through a month-long residency at Brooklyn’s Claywork on Columbia. The four artists will work under the mentorship of master thrower Tracie Hervy and artist Anina Major, and will benefit from studio space, materials and a skilled team of local artisans to realise new work that ‘preserve our connection to the ancestral ritualistic practice of forming permanent vessels from mud and clay.’ Founded in 2013 as a creative agency, Saint Heron’s mission is to preserve, document and archive works of artists of colour. ‘We have to make sure we are preservers of our own stories,’ the company said in an interview, ‘and we are not leaving that up to the institutions around us to have all of the power of those stories for generations to come.’
Meanwhile, the newly-launched Horizon Art Foundation has announced that Laurie Kang, Phillip John Velasco Gabriel, Sara Cwynar and Ilana Savdie will be the first four participants in their residency programme. Funded by collectors Jason Li and Harry Hu and under the direction of former Whitney curator Christopher Y. Lew, the foundation offers two-month residencies in a 446sqm studio in Downtown Los Angeles to artists working in the US.
