Tate Modern will be launching a new strand of monthly artists’ film premieres, starting with the UK premiere of Ming of Harlem: Twenty One Storeys in the Air by British artist and filmmaker Phillip Warnell. Narrated by French philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy, this feature-length film relates the real-life story of Antoine Yates, who for several years cohabited with a tiger called Ming and a large alligator in his high-rise apartment in Harlem, raising questions about the domestic relations between humans and animals.
Ming of Harlem will be shown on 18 February and will be followed by a Q&A with Warnell and Jean-Pierre Rehm, director of the FIDMarseille-International Film Festival Marseille, where the film received the Georges Beauregard International Prize earlier this year.
Other upcoming previews on the programme include Singularity by Catalonian director Albert Serra on 13 March, a project commissioned for the Catalan participation at the forthcoming 56th Venice Biennale; The Cast by Clemens von Wedemayer on 30 April, an experimental film incorporating 3D animation with a narrative based on an incident that took place during the shooting of the film Ben Hur (1959); and on 20 May, Rosa Barba’s The Hidden Conference, which captures unseen and uncurated art works in storage at the Neue National-galerie in Berlin.
