Arles’s annual ‘Rencontres de la Photographie’ returns for its forty-sixth edition, with 35 photography shows, including a programme exploring photography in dialogue with architecture, music and cinema, and the Arles Books Festival.

As part of the main section of the programme titled Rereading: the History of Photography Revisited, the festival will be presenting two solo shows by pivotal figures of American photography: Walker Evans – Anonymous will put an emphasis on Evans’s lesser-known printed pages, and in particular his work for American magazines, while the work of Stephen Shore will be revisited in a major retrospective. Other highlights include the presentation of Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown’s archive of their Las Vegas Studio project, Paul Ronald’s colour photographs from Fellini’s black and white masterpiece 8 ½ (1963) and a group show featuring over 200 vintage and contemporary prints by eight Japanese photographers, including Hosoe and Moriyama. Solo presentations by the ten contestants for the Discovery Award will also be on show at the festival’s main venue, Parc des Ateliers; with the winner announced during the festival’s opening week.

Should all this entice you to plan a trip (or you have the good fortune to live in the area), then a mere stone’s throw away, in Avignon, Yvon Lambert will be reopening his collection to the public, after two years of renovation works, together with a temporary show, An Imaginary Museum, an exhibition-tribute to the giant of theatre Patrice Chéreau (11 July – 11 October).
