Prudential Eye Awards for Contemporary Asian Art

Japanese Collective ChimPom have taken overall prize in The Prudential Eye Awards: Contemporary Asian Art 2015, which recognises artists in the early stages of their careers, and shortlists from 500 nominated artists from across the Asia region. This year’s awards, taking place during Art Stage Singapore, opened on 17 January with The Prudential Eye Awards Exhibition, at ArtScience Museum, showcasing work by 16 Singaporean artists.

The award winners were chosen from a shortlist comprising the top three nominated ‘Best Emerging Artists’ in six media categories:

Digital/video (won by ChimPom), overall winners

Painting (won by Christine Ay Tjoe)

Drawing (won by Mithu Sen)

Sculpture (won by Meekyoung Shin)

Installation (won by Donna Ong)

Photography (won by Sherman Ong)

The winners of each of the six ‘Best Emerging Artist’ categories each received $20,000, The overall winner Chim Pom will receive an additional $30,000 and a solo exhibition at The Saatchi Gallery, London.

The latest initiative of the Prudential Eye Programme, which supports artists and art organisations across the Asia region, and whose previous projects include Korean Eye (2009 to 2012), Indonesian Eye (2011), Hong Kong Eye (2013) and Prudential Malaysian Eye (2014), the Prudential Eye Awards are a partnership between Parallel Contemporary Art, Saatchi Gallery and Prudential.

In addition to the ‘Best Emerging Artist awards’, a further seven awards were given including Lifetime Achievement Award for Asian Contemporary Art, Best Gallery Supporting Emerging Asian Contemporary Art, Best Writing on Asian Contemporary Art, Best Institution and Best Exhibition of Asian Contemporary Art. The winners, judged by an international panel comprising Serenella Ciclitira, Tsong-zung Chang, Nigel Hurst, Fumio Nanjo, Niru Ratnam and ArtReview’s Editor-in-Chief Mark Rappolt, took place at Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands, Singapore, on 20 January.

The Prudential Eye Awards Exhibition continues until 31 March.
