ICA will be hosting a panel discussion around the work of Lawrence Alloway (1926–1990), with speakers including art historians Courtney J. Martin, Anne Wagner and Victoria Walsh, and ArtReview editor Mark Rappolt, to coincide with launch of Lawrence Alloway: Critic and Curator (Lucy Bradnock, Courtney J. Martin, and Rebecca Peabody, 2015, Getty Publications).
Based in London in the 1950s, Alloway became a leading member of The Independent Group who met at the ICA, where he later worked as associate director. During this time, he also contributed regularly to ArtReview (which was then called Arts News and Reviews) with reviews and art historical pieces. Credited with coining the term ‘pop art’, Lawrence Alloway also championed conceptual art and feminist art in America, where he moved to in the 1960s to work as a curator at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. In 1970, he co-founded the magazine Art Criticism with the critic Donald Kuspit.
