Pierre Huyghe: In. Border. Deep, through 1 November at Hauser & Wirth

Pierre Huyghe brings his affecting, time-travelling sensory aesthetic to Hauser & Wirth with a show of all new works that include a series of aquariums that replicate the conditions of Monet’s ponds in Giverny, and the short film Human Mask, 2014, in which the activities of a monkey in a mask evokes a feeling of dystopian loss that’s as eerily poignant as it is powerful.

Shinro Ohtake, 12 October through 12 December at Parasol Unit

This exhibition features early, recent and new works by the influential Japanese multimedia artist, who can count William Burroughs among his admirers, and whose collage-based practice incorporating found everyday materials extends into sculpture, multilayered scrapbooks, paintings, installations, films, music and architecture.

Gerhard Richter, October 14 through 20 December at Marian Goodman Gallery

Marian Goodman makes an impact by inaugurating her impressive new London Gallery with an exhibition of over 40 works by the multimillion-dollar selling Gerhard Richter. On show will be new paintings from the Strip, Flow and Doppelgrau (Double Grey) series, alongside selected earlier works and a large glass sculptural piece.

Grace Schwindt: Only a Free Individual Can Create a Free Society, through 29 November at the Showroom

Through the use of costumed choreography and elaborate props, this newly commissioned feature-length-film installation, by the London-based artist, and which was inspired by Schwindt’s leftwing upbringing in 1980s and 90s Germany, explores what freedom, within the context of political and social structures, actually means.

Philippe Parreno: With a Rhythmic Instinction to Be Able to Travel Beyond Existing Forces of Life: 14 October through 14 November at Pilar Corrias

This show, by the artist who likes to play with perceptions of time and space, features audio and visual works that include a moving mechanical window blind that translates sounds outside the gallery space into an ambient melody inside, and a flickering animation created from hundreds of drawings of fireflies.

14 October 2014.
