The Hammer Museum has announced the list of participating artists for the fourth edition of the Made in LA biennial, scheduled to run from 3 June to 2 September. Organised by Hammer curators Anne Ellegood and Erin Christovale, the biennial will feature artists who ‘deeply engaged with vital aspects of our culture today and believe in art’s capacity to engage social discourse’ the curators said in a statement. Though not ‘overtly political’, the biennial – and the work of the artists selected – ‘is inevitably informed by the dramatic shifts in our country since the 2016 election and how they impact the contemporary landscape and culture of California’. In particular, the show will address the changes effected on the city’s infrastructure (from population growth to the booming art scene to real estate development), ‘the body – and the social, physiological, and psychological pressures put upon it’ and ‘the desire for community and a sense of place rooted in the local’.
Based on over 200 studio visits, Ellegood and Christovale have selected 32 artists, aged between 28 and 97. They are:
