Galleria Continua, San Gimigniano

Galleria Continua is turning to Brazil’s new generation in its current programme in San Gimigniano, presenting for the first time Marcelo Cidade, Jonathas de Andrade and André Komatsu in three interrelated solo shows.

In recent years, all three artists have become increasingly visible on the international stage as major figures of Brazil’s contemporary creative production. Influenced by Brazil’s modernist urban development, Cidade, and Komatsu (who are studio mates in São Paulo) have developed a specific relation to architecture in their practice and will as a result present site-specific works engaging with the particular features of the gallery space, as well as offering a meditation on the recent and often violent street protests in their home country. De Andrade’s work also has this political undercurrent, tackled through a broader reference to social history and the economy. The artist frequently combines catalogues, images, texts, life stories and architectural material, to produce new narratives and possible histories.
