Performa Biennial of live interdisciplinary performance by visual artists has announced the full program for its tenth edition, featuring 40 artists from around the world. The 2023 edition will take place from 1–19 November across various venues in New York City.
Celebrating the extraordinary vitality, inventiveness, and significance of New York City, Performa Biennial 2023 is directed by a sense of political urgency. Across mediums, the featured artists are united by their commitment to environmental, political or cultural critique. This year’s Biennial includes: the Performa Commissions, a series of new works produced over the course of two years; the Finnish Pavilion Without Walls, which brings together experimental performance, dance and sound-based artists from Finland; the Performa Hub, featuring a range of programs including the launch of the Performa Archives; a new series titled Protest & Performance: A Way of Life; as well as partnerships with leading experimental cultural organizations across the city. This year’s Performa Commissions will feature artists Nikita Gale, Julien Creuzet, Marcel Dzama, Franz Erhard Walther, Nora Turato and Haegue Yang.
Tickets are now available on the Performa Biennial 2023 website, designed by acclaimed New York-based design studio Pacific, which features a full schedule of performances and commission descriptions. The website will host live streaming of the performances through the Performa Broadcast platform.
Performa Biennial 2023 is organized by RoseLee Goldberg, Founding Director and Chief Curator; Esa Nickle, Managing Director and Executive Producer; Charles Aubin, Senior Curator and Head of Publications; Defne Ayas, Senior Program Advisor and Curator-at-Large; Kathy Noble, Senior Curator; Job Piston, Curator-at-Large; and Madeleine Seidel, Curatorial Assistant. Founded in 2004, Performa provides a worldwide platform for performance of the twenty first century. Since 2005, Performa has produced nine biennials, reaching an international audience of over 250,000 people and featuring more than 800 artists at over 200 venues across New York City.
