‘Now We Learn a Lot From Nature’: Dumb Type on Representing Japan at the 59th Venice Biennale

ArtReview sent a questionnaire to artists and curators exhibiting in and curating the various national pavilions of the 2022 Venice Biennale, the responses to which will be published daily in the leadup to and during the Venice Biennale, which runs from 23 April to 27 November.

Dumb Type, a collective of artists founded in 1984, are representing Japan; the pavilion is in the Giardini.

ArtReview What can you tell us about your exhibition plans for Venice?

Dumb Type We will exhibit a new sound installation with our original sound system (parametric speaker) and laser system.

AR Why is the Venice Biennale an important event? 

DT All exhibitions including the Venice Biennale are equally important for us.

AR Which other artists have influenced or inspired you?

DT Many artists influenced us in our 20s.

Now we learn a lot from nature.

AR If you’ve been to the biennale before, what’s your earliest or best memory from Venice?  

DT Hans Haacke, Germania, 1993, German Pavilion.

AR What else are you looking forward to seeing at the Venice Biennale?

DT Exchanges with people from various countries and peace.
