The Gwangju Biennale Foundation has announced author and curator Nicolas Bourriaud as the artistic director for the 15th Gwangju Biennale, scheduled to open in September 2024. For the 15th edition, Bourriaud plans to create a discourse-driven exhibition that focuses on the spaces, experiences and borders of the human species, helping to reconsider art’s role in recovering from the fragmented reality of the post-pandemic era.
Bourriaud has previously curated multiple international exhibitions such as Tate Triennial 2009, Taipei Biennale 2014 and Istanbul Biennale 2019. From 1999 to 2006, he founded and co-directed the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, after which he was Gulbenkian Curator for Contemporary Art at Tate Britain in London until 2010. In 2022, Bourriaud initiated the international curatorial cooperative Radicants and curated its first exhibition Planet B: Climate Change and the New Sublime in Palazzo Bollani, Venice. Bourriaud’s written works include Relational Aesthetics (1998), Postproduction (2002), The Radicant (2009) and Inclusions: Aesthetics of the Capitalocene (2020).
