Rolling news: 12–18 October

The shortlist for the eighth Max Mara Art Prize for Women, supported by The Whitechapel Gallery, Collezione Maramotti and Max Mara, has been announced. Allison Katz, Katie Schwab, Tai Shani, Emma Talbot and Hannah Tuulikki were confirmed at a ceremony at Collezione Maramotti in Reggio Emilia, where a new work by last year’s winner Helen Cammock is on view. 

A major installation by Beatriz González in Bogotá’s Central Cemetery has been declared a national asset of cultural interest by the Colombian government. Auras Anónimas (2009) comprises a series of silk-screened images overlaid onto the tombstones. The nearly 9,000 prints show silhouettes of people picking up corpses from battlefields, and make reference to the histories of violence in the country. The work had been under threat of demolition from the municipal authorities. 

Kim Inseon has been appointed as the artistic director of the second edition of the Jeju Biennale, scheduled to open in May 2020. She will be joined on the curatorial team by Leeji Hong. 

François Pinault has confirmed that his new Paris museum will open in June. Located in the former Paris stock exchange, and designed by Tadao Ando, the $170 million institution will house the French billionaire’s collection. Pinault previously announced that he was planning a collaborative exhibition with the Centre Pompidou, to open in late 2020.

John Giorno, the avant-garde poet who applied the techniques of Pop art to the production and dissemination of literature, has died at the age of 82. He was joined in whatever place artists end up by Carlos Celdran, the influential Filipino artist and founder of the Manila Biennale best-known for a controversial 2010 protest against the Catholic Church that led to his prosecution for blasphemy.
