Last week, South Korea’s National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) opened its fourth venue in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province. The new space is located on the site of a historic tobacco factory that operated for nearly six decades before its decommissioning in 2004. The 215,000-square-foot, five-story exhibition space will house about 11,000 artworks from MMCA’s modern and contemporary collections currently held across its other sites at eoul, Deoksugung, and Gwacheon. A director of MMCA Cheongju has yet to be announced.
On Monday, performance artist Jennifer Harge was awarded the inaugural Eva Yaa Asantewaa Grant for Queer Women(+) Dance Artists, presented by Queer|Art, a New York–based nonprofit ‘dedicated to boosting the creative and professional development of LGBTQ artists’. Harge will receive $10,000 for a new performance installation titled Fly | Drown that will draw on “ancestral knowledge, personal experience, and movement to offer Black audiences strategies towards bodily autonomy.” The work will premiere in Detroit in autumn 2019.
