Iranian photographer Newsha Tavakolian is the recipient of the 2015 Prince Claus Award, Art Asia Pacific reports. Worth €100,000, the prize is granted every year by the Prince Claus Fund for Culture and Development to artists, thinkers and cultural organizations undertaking transformative work in the developing world.

Born in 1981, Tavakolian is one of Iran’s pioneering female photojournalists working in Iran and the Middle East, who recently expanded her practice to create photobooks and installations, including The Great Game, now on view at the Iran Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale. Tavakolian said she plans on donating a large portion of her monetary prize to various charitable organisations, including €15,000 in support to Syrian and Iraqi refugees.
