Artist Kimsooja receives 2015 Ho-Am Prize for the Arts in Seoul

New York-based Korean artist Kimsooja was awarded the 2015 Ho-Am Prize for the Arts in Seoul, Art Asia Pacific reports, receiving a cash prize of KRW 300 million (GBP 175,300).

The Ho-Am prize is distributed across five fields (science, engineering, medicine, the arts, and community service), and the arts section encompasses literature, music, visual art, design, dance and theatre. Since the creation of the prize in 1990, Kimsooja is only the third visual artist, after Lee Ufan and Nam June Paik, and the first woman, to win this prize. 

Born in 1957 in Dagu, South Korea, Kimsooja has been working across video, performance, installation and textile for the past two decades. Recent exhibitions include the 9th Gwangju Biennale, the Korean Pavilion at the 2013 Venice Biennale, the 2014 Busan Biennale, and an ongoing solo show at Guggenheim Bilbao (through 5 July).
