As David Zwirner celebrates his gallery’s 25th anniversary this month, the dealer has announced plans for yet another gallery in New York, which will become the gallery’s headquarters. Located at 540 west 21st Street, the five-storey $50 million gallery will be designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano and is scheduled to open in 2020. This will be Zwirner’s seventh space worldwide, and his fourth in New York, though he’s likely to close his West 19th Street location once the new gallery opens: ‘I feel very acutely that there is a too-much that’s possible’, the dealer told the New York Times. Another 900sqm gallery is set to open in Hong Kong on 27 January, the gallery’s first space in Asia.

The new project will break ground this spring, and is part of a residential project that is being developed by the investor Uri Chaitchik of Casco Development – though the gallery will be a separate structure.
