The Museum of Modern art, New York, has announced Inés Katzenstein as the first director of The Patricia Phelps De Cisneros Research Institute for the Study of Art from Latin America. She has also been named curator of Latin American art at the museum. The new institute, located in MOMA’s main venue, was launched after Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, philanthropist and longtime MoMA trustee, gifted the museum 102 works from her collection in 2016.
Katzenstein takes on these new roles as she returns from Buenos Aires, where she founded the art department at the Universidad Torcuato Di Tella. Previously, she served as a curator at the Malba-Colección Costantini in Buenos Aires and worked on MoMA’s Listen, Here, Now! Argentine Art in the 1960s (2004), the first volume in a series of publications dedicated to Latin American art. Katzenstein has also curated numerous exhibitions internationally, including the Argentine pavilion at the 2007 Venice Biennale and the Zona Franca, Mercosur Biennial in 2007 (cocurator).
In her new roles, Katzenstein will work on developing MOMA’s exhibition and acquisition programme, as well as on the launch of the Cisneros Institute. Working with visiting scholar and fellows, the institute will present symposia, lectures, and education programmes, and produce publications, in both print and digital formats, related to Latin American art.
