Artist filmmaker Ursula Mayer has won the 2014 Film London Jarman Award, an annual prize inspired by the work of Derek Jarman.
As winner, Mayer received £10,000 and a film commission for Random Acts, a short-form daily arts strand aired on UK Television station Channel 4. From the shortlist of ten artists, Sebastian Buerkner, Marvin Gaye Chetwynd, and Iain Forsyth & Jane Pollard will also be commissioned for the programme.
Mayer, who studied at Vienna’s Academy of Fine Arts and the Royal College of Art, graduated from an MA at Goldsmiths College in 2005. She has exhibited extensively in major festivals and institutions worldwide, such as Performa 11, New York; Palais de Tokyo, Paris; Tramway, Glasgow; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Institute of Contemporary Arts, London; Whitechapel Gallery, London; MoMA PS1, New York; Garage, Moscow; and Kunsthalle Basel. Her films Medea (2013) and Gonda (2012) currently form part of an installation for Mirrorcity at the Hayward Gallery (on through 4 January 2015).
Winners of previous edition include Luke Fowler, Lindsay Seers, Emily Wardill, Anya Kirschner & David Panos, James Richards and John Smith.
