Nicholas Serota has announced that he will be stepping down from his role as Tate director next year, after nearly 30 years at the organisation, during which time he oversaw the creation of Tate Liverpool, Tate St. Ives and Tate Modern and record attendance figures, culminating with the opening of the new Tate Modern building in June of this year.
The extension of Tate’s reach and influence as both a national and international institution was one of the factors in Serota reaching the no. 1 position in ArtReview’s Power 100 in 2014, the annual ranked list of the international artworld’s most influential figures.
Serota, who turned 70 this year, will be taking up the part-time role of Chairman of the Arts Council on 1 February 2017.
