Director of the British Museum Neil MacGregor has announced his decision to step down at the end of December 2015. Having been in the post since 2002 MacGregor is recognised for his contribution to making the institution the world’s second-most visited museum (after the Louvre).
Although MacGregor is retiring from full-time employment, he has said that he would be involved in a number of projects, including a new BBC Radio 4 series, Faith and Society, in collaboration with the British Museum; chairing an advisory board for the German Minister of Culture and working with CSMVS Museum in Mumbai on the presentation of world cultures in the museum.
MacGregor, also known for presenting the hugely popular BBC radio 4 series A History Of The World In 100 Objects, said that it was a good time for him to step down, with the museum having just completed its new World Conservation and Exhibitions Centre and having built strong partnerships with fellow museums across the UK and internationally.
