The next edition of the quinqueninal art exhibition, Documenta 14, to be held in 2017, will take place in Athens as well as the German town of Kassel – which has been the sole host of the exhibition since its inauguration in 1955.

The two-venue structure was set out at a symposium on 6 October, at which Artistic Director Adam Szymczyk explained that the decision was made in order to alter visitors perceptions of the exhibition, to reflect current European divisions between North and South and to emphasise feelings of loss that might arise from all forms of displacement.

The proposed schedule will see Documenta 14 opening in Athens in April 2017 and then inaugurated two months later in Kassel, on June 10, with a month of overlap. Each of the two parts of the exhibition will be developed as an autonomous project.
