2019 Venice Biennale artist list revealed

The list of participating artists in the 58th edition of the Venice Biennale has been revealed. The biennale, curated by the Hayward Gallery’s Ralph Rugoff, will feature works by 79 international artists – a significant decrease in comparison to 140 participants in 2017. About his edition, titled May You Live in Interesting Times (a phrase often mistaken as a Chinese proverb), Rugoff said: ‘let us acknowledge at the outset that art does not exercise its forces in the domain of politics. Art cannot stem the rise of nationalist movements and authoritarian governments in different parts of the world, for instance, nor can it alleviate the tragic fate of displaced peoples across the globe (whose numbers now represent almost one percent of the world’s entire population). But in an indirect fashion, perhaps art can be a kind of guide for how to live and think in “interesting times”.’ The exhibition will run from 11 May to 24 November 2019 across the Giardini and Arsenale spaces.
