The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, whose aim is to support and display work by artists of African descent, announced its plans for a $122 million (approx. £78 million) expansion designed by the British architect David Adjaye on West 125th Street.
A public-private initiative with support from the City of New York, the project is expected to be underway in 2017, to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the museum, which opened in 1968 and since 1982, has been operating in a commercial building renovated for it by African-American architect J. Max Bond, Jr.
The new building, spanning the two adjacent lots, will function as an exhibition gallery, an archive, a workplace for artists in residence and a communal space for the Harlem community and its visitors.
