The Second Yinchuan Biennale has announced its list of participating artists for 2018. Titled Starting from the Desert. Ecologies on the Edge, the biennale’s theme looks at the specific geographical region of the Silk Road trade route that historically connected continents and cultures. Adopting an ‘archaeological’ approach to explore concepts such as hybridisation, geo-economics and the macro-society, the biennale will be presented in four sections: ‘Nomadic Space and Rural Space’ (on interactions with the physical environment), ‘Labor-in-Nature and Nature-in-Labor’ (focusing on forces of production, exploitation and appropriation), ‘The Voice and The Book’ (on the production of knowledge) and ‘Minorities and Multiplicity’.
Under the artistic direction of Marco Scotini and a curatorial team of Andris Brinkmanis, Paolo Caffoni, Zasha Colah and Lu Xinghua, the biennale will include ancient artefacts from public museums and private collections along with newly commissioned works. Ninety participating artists have been chosen from over 30 regions – with a particular focus on Mongolia, Central and Southeast Asia.
