Martin Roth, the director of the Victoria and Albert Museum is to step down this autumn after five years in the post, The Art Newspaper reports. No reason has been given for the decision but there has been speculation as to whether Brexit, which the German born Roth spoke out against, may have played a role.

The museum attracted a record 3.5m visitors in 2015-16 and was awarded the Art Fund Museum of the Year in July. Roth, aged 61, has said that he intends to relocate to Berlin, where he will be taking on consultancy projects. The post will now be advertised to find Roth’s replacement.
