Korean artist Haegue Yang has been awarded the 2018 Wolfgang Hahn Prize by the Gesellschaft für Moderne Kunst am Museum Ludwig, an award that is presented to artists whose practices have ‘consistently and substantially continued to develop and is recognized by international experts’. Yang, who is based in Berlin, is the first Asian artist to have been selected as a recipient of the prize. As well as the acquisition of a work or series of works by the artist, the prize also includes an exhibition at Museum Ludwig, for which a publication will be released. The award ceremony will take place in April 2018.
The 2018 awarding jury was attended by Christina Végh, director of the Kestner Gesellschaft in Hanover; Yilmaz Dziewior, director of the Museum Ludwig; Mayen Beckmann, chairwoman of the Gesellschaft für Moderne Kunst; and Gabriele Bierbaum, Sabine DuMont Schütte, Jörg Engels, and Robert Müller-Grünow, who are all board members of the Gesellschaft für Moderne Kunst.
Some of Yang’s latest institutional solo exhibitions include: Lingering Nous at Centre Pompidou, Paris (2016); Uncharted Territory at Hamburger Kunsthalle (2016); Come Shower or Shine, It Is Equally Blissful at UCCA, Beijing (2015); Shooting the Elephant, Thinking the Elephant at Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art, Seoul (2015). In 2019, she will present an exhibition at The Geffen Contemporary, The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.
