Thomas Krens, founder of Mass MoCA and former director of the Guggenheim, has invited Frank Gehry to design a new museum for model trains and famous buildings, The New York Times reports. The Extreme Model Railroad and Contemporary Architecture Museum will be located close to Mass MoCA in North Adams, Massachusetts, and at 7,700 square metres, the project is estimated to cost $65 million (about £50m).

As part of Mass MoCA’s expansion, the new museum will feature the work of 71 prominent and international architects, including Frank Lloyd Wright and Louis Sullivan. The architectural models to be displayed will be on one scale, which will include a replica of the Empire State Building that will stand at around 10 metres tall. Krens, who expects the museum to open in 2020, told The New York Times: ‘We’re creating it with historical obsession and mesmerizing detail’.
