Chinese artist Hao Jingban has been announced the winner of the Han Nefkens Foundation’s ARCOmadrid Video Art Award 2019. Hao will receive €15,000 to fund the production of a new videowork that reflects on the symbolic title of Felix Gonzáles-Torres’s pair of synchronised clocks, Perfect Lovers, and will be presented next year at Matadero Madrid coinciding with ARCOmadrid 2020. The work will then travel internationally between art centres and institutions. Hao is best known for her Beijing Ballroom project (2012–2016), which traces the current ballrooms in Beijing from the early 1950s and Post-Cultural Revolution in late 1970s to today. She was chosen by a judging panel comprising Han Nefkens, founder of the Han Nefkens Foundation; Ana Ara, curator of programmes at Matadero Madrid; Manuel Segade, director of Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo; Sunjung Kim, president of the Gwangju Biennale Foundation and Rein Wolfs, director of the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn.
The shortlisted artists included: Karimah Ashadu (UK), Manuel Correa (Colombia), Aziz Hazara (Afghanistan), Polina Kanis (Russia), Ross Little (UK), Jorge Scobell (Mexico), Wong Ping (Hong Kong).
