Mami Kataoka to curate next Biennale of Sydney in 2018

Mami Kataoka, currently chief curator at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, has been announced as the artistic director for the 21st Biennale of Sydney, due to open in 2018. She is the first curator from Asia to take on the position since the Biennale’s inauguration in 1973.

Since joining the Mori Art Museum in 2003, Kataoka has curated numerous exhibitions including Roppongi Crossing (2004, 2013) as well as major survey shows of prominent artists in Asia such as Tsuyoshi Ozawa, Ai Weiwei, Lee Bul, Makoto Aida, Lee Mingwei, and N.S. Harsha (upcoming). Previously, she served as international curator of the Hayward Gallery, London (2007–9), and curator at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery (1998–2002). Kataoka is also a board member of CIMAM, a member of Guggenheim Museum Asia Art Council, an advisory member for Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing and a professor at Kyoto University of Art and Design Graduate School.
