American ceramicist Betty Woodman has died aged 87. Woodman began her career as a professional potter which later developed into an artistic practice in the 1950s. Her works, which take the form of vessels, are known for merging fine art and craft while blending inspiration from different cultures. In 2006, the Metropolitan Museum of Art held a survey of her work, making Woodman the living first female artist to be honoured with a retrospective at the New York museum. Her ceramics are held in more than 40 museum collections worldwide.
