Curator Lizzie Carey-Thomas has been appointed as head of programmes at the Serpentine Galleries in London, after 16 years as curator of contemporary British art at Tate Britain. She will take over from Jochen Volz, who was recently appointed as curator of the 32nd São Paulo Biennial which takes place in 2016.
During her time at Tate, she co-curated the Art Now series of projects for emerging artists (2002–2012), and has been the lead curator of the Turner Prize since 2002. In 2012 she was the lead curator for the exhibition Migrations: Journeys into British Art, which explored the impact of migration on 500 years of British art through the Tate collection. Most recently, Carey-Thomas inaugurated Contemporary Projects (an exhibition series focusing on works by emerging artists who are not yet part of Tate Britain’s collection) with The Weight of Data, presenting works by Eloise Hawser, Charlotte Prodger, Katrina Palmer and Yuri Pattison, on through 28 October.
