Woman questioned after reading Syrian art book on flight

A woman has been detained on a flight back from her honeymoon in Turkey after the flight crew found her choice of book suspicious, the Guardian reports. Faizah Shaheen, a British Muslim psychotherapist from Leeds, was reading Syria Speaks: Art and Culture from the Frontline, a 2014 collection published by Saqi Books which ‘showcases the work of over fifty artists and writers who are challenging the culture of violence in Syria. Police at Doncaster airport questioned Shaheen for 15 minutes on arrival having been tipped off by the Thompson airlines staff. Zaher Omareen, the co-editor of Syria Speaks, described Shaheen’s detention to the Guardian as a ‘despicable incident’.
