London-based artist Idris Khan has been commissioned to design a public monument for the forthcoming Memorial Park in Abu Dhabi. Sean Kelly, Khan’s US dealer, announced that the winning design was selected from three nominees by the government of Abu Dhabi. The new Memorial Park (construction to begin this year) will be built to commemorate Emiratis who have sacrificed their lives in service to the UAE. Khan’s plaza-inspired design centres around a sculpture of metal panels and a pool that will provide space for reflection.

31 March 2016.

An earlier version of this news story stated Khan was selected from a shortlist of four, not three. This has now been corrected.
