A £100,000 annual award has been launched to acknowledge and support a midcareer UK-based women artist. The Freedlands Artist Award is unlike the Tate’s Turner Prize in that artists over 50 years old are eligible. The award comes from the Freedlands Foundation, an arts education organisation run by media executive and Tate trustee Elisabeth Murdoch who last year commissioned a report which found that although female art and design graduates outnumber men, women are not adequately represented at, and beyond, a mid-career point.
The selection panel for the inaugural Freedlands Artist Award includes artist Phyllida Barlow, curator Teresa Gleadow, the director of Camden Arts Centre Jenni Lomax and Martin Clark, director of the Bergen Kunsthalle in Norway. The winner will be announced in autumn 2016.
