Sobey Art Award doubles prize money

Canada’s Sobey Art Award has announced it will significantly increase the prize money from the 2018 edition. The increase was made possible thanks to a donation from the Donald R. Sobey Foundation to the Sobey Art Foundation. Established in 2002, the prize is organised by the National Gallery of Canada with the aim of supporting the career of Canadian artists under 40.

This gift will bring the top cash prize from $50,000 to $100,000, and the four shortlisted artists’ prize from $10,000 to $25,000. The twenty long-listed artists’ prizes will also double to $2,000. The foundation has also announced the launch of three fully-funded residencies for selected artists from the jury’s long list: one of which will be in partnership with Fogo Island Arts, Newfoundland, while the other two, yet to be announced, will be outside Canada.
