The Serpentine Galleries in London announced the opening of a new pavilion in Beijing this May, The Art Newspaper reports. The pavilion, designed by Beijing-based Jiakun Architects, will function as a public space for culture and events for a duration of six months.
The Serpentine Pavilion is an initiative launched in 2000 by the London institution, inviting architects – including Zaha Hadid, Frank Gehry and, currently, Francis Kéré – to build a temporary structure outside their main gallery in Hyde Park, London. The Beijing pavilion will be the first one built outside London, though previous editions have travelled outside the capital to Cornwall and Somerset, UK, Tirana, Albania, and Sainte Maxime, France.
The pavilion will be sited just outside the historic Forbidden City in the Dongcheng district, as part of the newly opened WF Central commercial development for luxury retail and hospitality.
