The Gwangju Biennale today announced further details of ‘Imagined Borders’, its twelfth edition, to be held in 2018. Having previously announced a shift to a ‘multiple curator system’, the Biennale named the eleven curators who will produce exhibitions across venues which include the Biennale Hall, the Asia Culture Center, the Gwangju Museum of Art and other cultural and historic spaces. Seven exhibitions will present responses to the imagination of borders.
According to the Biennale’s latest press statement ‘Imagined Borders is a guiding concept that responds to the current times of change and uncertainty by recognizing the limits of grand narratives, singular authorship and the necessity to return to the complexities of multiple voices and perspectives’. The curators announced are: Clara Kim, Gridthiya Gaweewong, Rita Gonzalez and Christine Y. Kim, Yeon Shim Chung and Yeewan Koon, Man Seok Kim, Sung woo Kim and Chong-Ok Paek, B.G. Muhn and David Teh.
Referencing the inaugural 1995 edition of the Gwangju Biennale, titled ‘Beyond the Borders’ the exhibition aims ‘to question the notion of belonging and community within today’s political and planetary crises, quite markedly changed from the early days of the biennial where globalization aimed to dissolve borders’.
