The 2018 edition of the annual art award has been launched today by United Overseas Bank Hong Kong (UOB Hong Kong). Titled UOB Art in Ink Awards, the programme intends to develop greater awareness and appreciation for ink art, provide a platform for local artists to showcase their work and highlight the ‘importance of cultural heritage and preservation’.
The competition also has a community outreach programme for which UOB Hong Kong will organise ink art workshops run by local artists at primary and secondary schools in the city.
The UOB Art in Ink Awards comprises of three categories: Established Artist (open to those aged over 18), Emerging Artist and Most Promising Artist (for ages 9 to 17). The winner of the Established Artist category will receive a scholarship for an overseas art residency.
The theme of this year’s award is ‘Connectivity’ and asks artists to ‘draw inspiration from or to demonstrate the many connections that define contemporary life. These can range from increasing global and digital connectivity to connections with nature or from relationships.’
The 2018 UOB Art in Ink Awards judges are Johnson Chang, founder of Hanart TZ Gallery; Chui Pui Chee, calligrapher and ink scholar; He Baili, Hong Kong ink artist of the Lingnan School; Calvin Hui, founder and director of INK ASIA; Olivia Wang, independent curator, art writer and representative of Ink Society Hong Kong and Zheng Chongbin, contemporary ink artist.
