Animal rights protestors demonstrated against the restaging of Jannis Kounellis’s Untitled (12 Horses) installation, on show as part of an exhibition at Gavin Brown’s current New York gallery space, by entering the gallery on the penultimate day of the show (26 June) with signs that stated ‘It’s not art, it’s animal abuse’ and ‘Modern Slavery’, artnet reports.
The work, which was first staged in 1969 at Galleria L’Attico in Rome, features 12 live horses chained to the gallery walls. The protestors protested against the horses inability to exercise or sleep during the gallery’s opening hours. The horses were attended by grooms at all times.
The exhibition, which also included works by Sturtevant and Rikrit Tiravanija, was Gavin Brown’s final show at the venue, before the gallery relocates to Harlem in July.
