The first woman to be appointed president of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Emily Rafferty, 65, will be retiring from the position next Spring, the New York Times reports.
The Met is currently planning major changes including a reconstruction of its modern and contemporary art wing and has recently taken over the Whitney Museum of American Art’s Marcel Breuer building to use as additional exhibition space. These prrojects are not scheduled to be completed until 2020.
Ms Rafferty joined the Met in 1976 as an administrator, rising to the post of vice president in charge of development and membership and later senior vice president for external affairs. She has also been chairwoman of New York City’s tourism and marketing agency since 2008 and became chairwoman of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York in 2012. Although retiring from the Met, Ms Rafferty has indicated that she is not retiring from public life and will be contemplating other projects.
