Anish Kapoor has been given artistic monopoly over the ‘world’s darkest colour’, reports the Daily Mail. In 2014, Surrey Nanosystems announced their development of Vantablack, a material made up of carbon nanotubes that absorbs 99.96% of light. Shortly after, Anish Kapoor spoke of his interest in working with the substance. It has now been revealed that Kapoor has been given an exclusive right to use Vantablack S-VIS – a modified version of the material that allows it to be sprayed onto a surface – in the artistic realm. While Surrey Nanosystems are continuing research into Vantablack’s scientific application, Kapoor’s claim to the colour precludes any other artistic use of it.
