Thai artist and filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul has been awarded the 2014 Yanghyun Prize, by a jury including Chris Dercon, Director of Tate Modern, and Adam D. Weinberg, Alice Pratt Brown Director of Whitney Museum of American Art.
Weerasethakul’s film, Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, (2009) won a Palme d’Or prize at Cannes Film Festival in 2010.
The Yanghyun Prize was established in Korea in 2008 by the Yanghyun Foundation, to promote art and support outstanding international artists at a mid-point in their careers. The recipient is given a cash prize of KRW 100,000,000 (about £60,000) plus support for a museum exhibition. Past recipients include Isa Genzken (2009), Akram Zaatari (2011), Abraham Cruzvillegas (2012) and Rivane Neuenschwander (2013).
