Tate announced today that Alex Farquharson, the current director of Nottingham Contemporary, has been appointed the new director of Tate Britain. Farquharson recently cocurated Glenn Ligon: Encounters and Collisions which was shown across Nottingham Contemporary and Tate Liverpool. Prior to Nottingham Contemporary he cocurated the British Art Show 6 (2005-6). He studied English and fine art at the University of Exeter (1988-1991) followed by a masters in arts criticism at City University, London (1992–93). He was on the selection committee for the British Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2009 (Steve McQueen), the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize in 2011, and Paul Hamlyn Foundation – Awards for Artists in 2012.
Farquharson, who will take up the role in the late autumn, replaces Penelope Curtis, director of the gallery since 2010, who resigned this year to take charge of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
