Japanese artist Kishio Suga, now 72, is the winner of the 2016 Mainichi Art Award in visual arts, a long-standing prize established by Japanese newspaper Mainichi Shimbun to honour contributions by outstanding figures in visual arts, literature, theatre, music and film, Art Asia Pacific reports.
Part of the Mono-ha movement formed in 1960s in rejection of Western modernism, Suga creates minimal installations with everyday, natural materials, interested in the developing organic relationships between them. Previous winners of the prize include fellow Mono-ha artist Lee Ufan, as well as architect Tadao Ando and photographer Nobuyoshi Araki of Japan.
His work will be on show at Milan’s HangarBicocca gallery in September 2016.
